This month, we highlight how our community schools support UCLA student learning–as teaching artists and as educational researchers. We are also excited to share one of the many community partnerships that inspire our students to dream big!
UCLA Teaching Artists Learn How to Uplift Communities
Listen to UCLA Senior Maria Vazquez explain what she has learned working at the RFK UCLA Community School as a teaching artist in the Multigenerational After School Arts (MASA) Program.
Sharing Our Research-Practice Partnerships in Toronto, Canada
UCLA graduate student researchers working in partnership with teachers and staff at both community schools joined 15,000 other researchers at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in Toronto in early April. Highlights included a lively roundtable presentation on what and how graduate students learn in partnership with teachers at the community schools–a strong testimony to the mutual benefits of university-assisted community schools. Other highlights included a packed session entitled, Challenging the Grammar of Schooling, with discussants Larry Cuban and Michael Fullan, as well as an Invited Presidential Session on reimagining neighborhood schools in urban communities. Presenting researchers included: Rebecca Cooper Geller, Sidronio Jacobo, Ung-Sang Lee, Shante Stuart McQueen, Marco Murillo, Karen Hunter Quartz, Karla Rivera-Torres, and Evelyn Wang.
