In anticipation of the election next week, we are excited to share an interview with Dr. Marisa Saunders, released by the National Education Policy Center. This month, we are also releasing new reports about the work of our two UCLA Community Schools as well as community schools statewide. Next month, we’ll be sharing this work at the National University-Assisted Community Schools conference and with the California State Board of Education.

Community Schools and the Elections
We are excited to share a recent interview with Dr. Marisa Saunders and the National Education Policy Center (NEPC). In the lead up to the election, NEPC will publish 10 Q&As with NEPC Fellows about education issues relevant to the 2024 federal election. Marisa was selected based on her expertise and experience conducting practice-oriented research on K-12 transformation efforts aimed to address long-standing educational inequalities.
UCLA Community Schools: 2023-2024 Annual Reports
We’re pleased to share the 2023-2024 Annual Reports from the UCLA Community School and Mann UCLA Community School. The reports are on our website and linked below.
UCLA Community Schools Welcome Bruin Corps Tutors
This fall, both UCLA Community Schools welcome 12 undergraduate Bruin Corps tutors who will be on site every day to support students. The Bruin Corps staff are supported by UCLA and many are returning from being previous tutors at both Mann and RFK, a testament to the dedication towards the students they support. Overjoyed to see a mentor, one student in the hallway shouted, “Ms. Jocelyn, you’re back!” We look forward to the expertise and commitment Bruin corps tutors bring to our students and school community.
California Community Schools: Deep Dive Updates
This month, we announce the release of a comprehensive report that shares findings from Cohort 1 of our Deep Dive Transformation Partners. Cohort 1 partners included Anaheim Union High School District in the Southern Coast R-TAC region, Shasta County Office of Education in the North Star R-TAC region, and West Contra Costa Unified School District in the Bay Area R-TAC region. The report outlines the structure and goals of the Deep Dive Strategy, introduces the reader to each Deep Dive site, and shares key learnings within and across each site.
We are also pleased to announce the selection of Cohort 2 Deep Dive partners! Cohort 2 includes Wheatland Union High School District and Gateway Community Charters, both from the Sacramento Regional Technical Assistance Region. It also includes two districts from the San Bernardino Regional Technical Assistance Region: Val Verde Unified School District and Ontario-Montclair School District. We look forward to sharing further updates from our Deep Dive work!
Dr. Karen Hunter Quartz will be sharing findings from our statewide work at the November 13th meeting of the State Board of Education in Sacramento.
