The Shasta County Data Use Case explores the creation of a data system in response to an urgent need to address chronic absenteeism. In 2019-2020, the county was facing the highest chronic absenteeism rates in California. Through intensive needs and assets assessments conducted across the county, SCOE leaders discovered a central problem: schools faced challenges outside their spheres of control and influence wherein families with identified needs would benefit from extra support. This data use case outlines SCOE’s creation of a centralized referral system and case management hub to assist families of school-age children facing attendance, behavioral, or other challenges.
